Instructions for access to chat rooms

1.) Via your web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, etc):

Your computer must be Java enabled as access to the chat room requires a java applet.  When you click on the link there will be a slight delay while the chat software checks to see if the chat applet has previously been installed.  If it the applet has not been installed previously a warning dialogue box will open asking you to accept the java applet.  The applet is safe so click on "Yes" and wait for the applet to load.  If you then see a dialogue box that gives a warning about the potential dangers of opening certain types of files and asking if you want to block those files you must click on "No" for the chat room to open.

Once you have joined the chat room you just type in the command line at the bottom of the chat window.  The cursor will be flashing in the command line box by default.  To get a nickname, type /nick nickname (e.g., /nick Bob).  If you are asked for a password that means the name you have chosen has been registered by someone else.  Just type the command again with another nickname (e.g., /nick Bob^, or /nick Bob1, and so on).

2.) For users of IRC chat clients (mIRC, X-Chat, etc):

In the status window of your preferred chat client type /server -m irc.induced.net.  Once connected get a channel list (type /list in the command line, or click on the room list icon in the menu bar of your IRC client) and join a chat room (or rooms) that looks interesting to you, or you can start your own room and bring your friends.  If you want assistance with starting your own room, join the #Help room and ask one the network administrators for advice.

(Note: As with most networks, the admins are volunteers so there might not actually be someone available at the time you join the room.  Simply leave a message and one of the admins will contact you as soon as they see your message.  If you are unable to stay online for any reason, the admins can send you a memo, via the network's memo system, or an e-mail to your preferred e-mail address (ideally, this should be the same one registered against your nickname) - just let them know which you would prefer).

If you don't have an IRC chat client and would like to get one instead of using your web browser (IRC clients usually provide a faster chat response, use less bandwidth and a smaller amount of your internet allowance from your isp), you can start with either the basic, raw mIRC here. A better option is a well-built, easy to install client with built in scripts that enhance the functionality, such as the scripts available on iServ.
